In an age where tearful farewell tours are routinely followed up by
triumphant comeback tours, no one expected that Phil Collins' cheekily
titled First Final Farewell Tour in 2004 really would turn out to be his
last solo jaunt.
Sadly, though, that appears to be the case. After the singer-drummer wrapped a reunion tour with Genesis at Hollywood Bowl in the fall of 2007, he was plagued by a dislocated vertebra. Surgery to fix that problem left him with nerve damage in his hands, which has seriously compromised his ability to pound the drums. "I can't play like I used to," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "And I don't want to go out there and do it half-assedly. I don't want to be a shadow of what I was. ... I don't anticipate playing anymore, and I don't anticipate writing anymore."
With the outlook bleak for a Second Final Farewell Tour, Collins' fans will want to snap up a copy of Eagle Rock's "Live at Montreaux" DVD. The two-DVD set ($19.98) includes Collins' full 24-song set from his First Final Farewell Tour show at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004, plus 13 songs from 1996 when Collins performed a jazz set with his own big band.
The '04 concert kicked off with a rousing drum duet between Collins and his longtime tour drummer, Chester Thompson, and continued with hit after hit after hit. There's "I Missed Again" and "In the Air Tonight" from "Face Value," "You Can't Hurry Love" from "Hello, I Must Be Going!," "Take Me Home" and "Don't Lose My Number" from "No Jacket Required" and such soundtrack singles as "Against All Odds," "Two Hearts" and "Separate Lives." The '96 set includes big band arrangements of Genesis' "That's All," "Invisible Touch" and "Los Endos," plus a duet with Tony Bennett on "There'll Be Some Changes Made."
